Our Mission

The civil parish of Thornbury lies in the district of Torridge in north Devon.  In 2012, the existing village hall fell into disuse, on account of its state of repair, inadequate size and lack of parking facilities. Today, Thornbury has no facility suitable for parish meetings held in the cold days of Winter, since the Church lacks adequate heating.  The Parish Council, the Parochial Church Council and other bodies need somewhere to meet that will encourage public engagement and discussion.

Although we are a rural farming community, we also have significant numbers of retirees. As folk grow older, we can also see that whilst they are prepared to drive a short distance to events, longer trips outside the parish can discourage them, as does the lack of adequate toilet facilities. Whilst ours is a geographically extended community, the planned location at Windy Cross sits conveniently at the heart of the Hamlets.

As you can see on our 'Get Involved' and "Gallery" pages, Thornbury Hamlets is an active and engaged community, which wants to build on its success to ensure that there is a thriving village for future generations.  We believe a central element of that future is our own hall, as a focal point for all ages.

The objects of the CIO are:

"To further or benefit the residents of the civil parish of Thornbury, Devon and the neighbourhood, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents."

In furtherance of these objects but not otherwise, the trustees shall have power:

"To establish or secure the establishment of a community centre and to maintain or manage or co-operate with any statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a centre for activities promoted by the charity in furtherance of the above objects."

This then, is our Mission!
